Back before most of us can remember, the role of families was that of a single unit. A father, mother, and children all worked hard together to produce enough to survive on. These were the days when a large majority of people worked on farms or raised cattle. Everyone in the family work together, out of necessity, in order to prosper.
With the introduction of the Industrial Revolution the family unit would undergo a dramatic change. The largest of these changes was caused by a location change of the workplace. Men that once worked on farms with their family took jobs in large factories and buildings away from the home. This created increased specialization in jobs for both men and women. Men would learn skills related to their specific job while women would take a larger role in the home. This is the era that most of us look to when we think of relationships and family. This is where our idea of the nuclear family comes from, better known as the Leave it to Beaver era.
We are now in what I consider to be a transition phase. We are moving away from the idea of the nuclear family to something largely unknown. It is this unknown that makes living in our time period so exciting! No one knows how our views on dating and relationships will change in the future.
One distinctive change has been a decrease in the boundaries associated with relationships. The idea of the nuclear family is quickly fading and being replaced by all sorts of options. In addition, women are having an increased role in the workplace, have made great strides in equality, and have gained more independence. All of this creates a dating world that none of us have ever seen before.
